Intelligent Navigation or a Road Roller?
At first it might seem more efficient to disregard cultural differences and demand that the other party dance to our tune, especially if we are the paying party. Multinational company groups have been known to prefer the re-education of their employees on other continents under the label of ’training’, somewhat reminiscent of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution.
Another, more humane and often more intelligent solution might be to learn the local circumstances and at least partly adapt to the situation. What is easier? For 300 locals to adapt to 3 foreign managers or vice versa? Even if we do not support certain cultural habits in our company, it would seem more logical to learn the motivation and thinking patterns of the locals before a major restructuring.
